"New York Life Insurance Tower"
As seen from the outdoor rooftop bar
at 230 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
For the last three days I was working on another pre-tape for Carson Daly's New Years' Eve special for NBC. For this event the musical guests were Nicki Menaj and Lil Wayne. The outdoor bar, 21 stories up atop 230 Fifth Avenue, is surrounded by a phenomenal panorama of mid-town Manhattan. All of the gear - video, audio, staging and lighting - was set up during a long, cold day-into-night on Wednesday. Each performer sang two songs, and did some tosses to and from Carson - as if it were a live event. Cameras and audio wrapped out last night, after the invited audience cleared the rooftop. We struck all the lighting gear on stage, so that the guys of the NBC Combo crew could strike the stage - starting at 6 am this morning - before we electricians came in at 8 to wrap out the lighting gear.
I spent the first half of my dinner break last night, as well as a good part of the sound checks, shooting pictures from various vantage points on the roof and from the 20th floor. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me this morning, as a NYPD helicopter circled the Empire State Building - a mere 8 blocks away from us - for what felt like 10 minutes. The copter looked to be incredibly - and uncomfortably - close to the building, from our perspective. It seemed to concentrate around the 86th floor observation deck, hovering for a while on both the north and south sides. I'm not sure what was going on; the best guess the three of us who witnessed this could come up with was that maybe someone was threatening to jump.
