2/9/11 - "Forest Flotsam"

"Forest Flotsam"

The words "forest" and "flotsam" are incongruous, and probably not used contiguously often, if ever. That I used them this way may be attributable to my alliterative nature, as I often tend to prefer titles - especially two-word titles - that start with the same letter. Or maybe it's just my OCD acting up. It could be worse: If I went with my predilection for assonance instead, I might have named this image "Tree Debris" instead. But I hadn't thought of that title possibility till just now. I could start a whole new category for photos called "Nautical Arboreal" - it would be strictly limited to assonantly appellated but illogical illusions.

One could argue that I should have used the word jetsam instead of flotsam, as this spiky seedpod was jettisoned from its former autumnal home in a trail side tree (assonance again - and now alliteration, oh no! (And yet more assonance!!) Will it never end???) That would not have been an alliterative title, but I digress...

In my defense, ever since I started living on the water (no, literally, right on the water - in a floating home, which is more commonly referred to as a housebarge) three years ago, I often find myself using nautical terminology. In the case of this picture, though, it's rather appropriate. This seedpod, which I believe is from a Sweet Gum tree, appears to be floating upon the foamy white froth of a shadowed-to-blue wave, formed from crystalline snow.

I'm enclosing a second picture, which I will mercifully let speak for itself. I think I actually prefer this image over the one I've posted as Picture of the Day. But what's done is done.

"Winter Streamscape"

Tomorrow I'll post the last image or two from Sunday's brief visit to Mill Pond Park in Wantagh, New York.
