6/16/11 - "White Lake Mansion House #7"

"White Lake Mansion House #7"

This seventh image is the last in this series of how this historic mansion, built in 1848 by David B. Kinne, looks these days. In its era White Lake Mansion House, which was constructed in the Greek Revival style, was the first profitable summer hotel in Sullivan County - in a region which later became famous as the "Borscht Belt" of the Catskill Mountains. It is now the last one remaining in the county.

The mansion is located on what is now known as Route 17B, but this thoroughfare was originally known as the Newburgh-Cocheton Turnpike. This route was surveyed by Samuel F. Jones who, along with his brother John Patterson Jones, established what is now the village of Monticello along the path of this major new artery.
