"Reflections of Sunset"
Originally, I had planned to start posting today a series of photos from our trip two weeks ago to Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, south on 9W towards West Point (although we didn't make it there, as our time was runnning short) and then on to White Lake, NY. But while I stepped out for a smoke break as I was working Saturday night, I captured this dramatically lit sunset view to the east, as I looked down East 67th Street in Manhattan. So I've decided to post this "one-off" today, before starting that next series.
I had, as I usually do, my small Canon Digital ELPH in a little case on my belt. So I was able to quickly pull it out, adjust a few settings and fire off a test shot. I was happy with the exposure but, as the shutter speed was 1/10th of a second - and I was zoomed all the way in (which magnifies any camera movement, and would normally call for a higher ISO/film speed) - I braced the camera against a wall and took one more shot. It was only while looking at the resulting image in the LCD screen that I realized how the smooth, black, reflective stone finish I'd leaned against had created a nearly-perfect mirror image copy, forming the left side of the picture!
In those few seconds time the golden light of the days' sunset was rapidly fading, so I was very glad to have captured this photo as fast as I did. A short time later, when I was back upstairs in the studio where I was working, I had a chance to look at what I'd wrought, on the larger screen of my Dell Netbook. That was when I first noticed the guy in the black vest, checking out the 'passing scenery.'
In editing the image this morning I brought out the foreground sidwalk, and the people who were on it, as well as doing some level adjusting and slight cropping. However, looking on a different screen tonight while at work, I think I may need to tone done the saturation and vibrance.
