9/2/11 - "After Irene - Layered Skies at Dusk"

Fine Art prints from Imagekind.com

A visage of twilight last Sunday night, hours after Hurricane Irene left a path of destruction in her aftermath. This view is looking directly south, from the back deck of my housebarge - which amazingly (and fortunately!) suffered very little damage. That's the newly refurbished Jones Beach State Park water tower just right of center, although in the Google Maps satellite view linked to above it is still undergoing renovations. The Nikon at Jones Beach Theater is evident, just to the left of center.

While the winds had shifted, and were now buffeting us from the west, the relative stillness and calm - after 24 hours of tropical storm conditions and fevered preparations for Irene's arrival - was a most welcomed relief. The weather the last five days, since the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Irene - up and down the east coast - has been absolutely splendorous. I finally got my boat back from storage last night and took a brief ride to survey and photograph some of the damage in neighboring Massapequa Cove, home to the Biltmore Beach Club, where I spent much of my time during twelve too-short summers. Those images will appear on these pages in the near future.
