Today's post contains three images of the one-car passenger trains that take visitors to the top of Mt. Washington, at an elevation of 6,288 feet. The approximately three-mile ride takes 65 minutes to ascend and 40 minutes to descend. In this picture, car #3 is fully loaded with passengers - who face downhill - and is about to begin the descent of nearly 3,300' to the base station, which is about 2,700' above sea-level.

This train is just about to start the descent, having already started backing down the track. As compared with the first photo, the step that the engineer's use is now nearly at the passenger's entrance end of the train.

At this point the engine has already crossed the crest, and the far end of the passenger's car appears to be suspended in mid-mountain-top-air.
