The Freer-Louw House
The Freer-Louw house is unique among the stone houses at Historic Huguenot Street. It is presented as it was modernized by Reverend John Follette, a Freer descendant, when he purchased the home and lived there in the 1940s. This house reflects the prevailing style of the time which nostalgia was balanced with modernity — the charm of the colonial past and the newest in household technology.
The house takes its name from Hugo Freer, a founder of New Paltz. The Freer family likely built a modest wood frame house on this site. Two generations later, Hugo's granddaughter Rebecca and her husband Johnannes Louw, who was German, inherited Hugo's house and, in two phases during the 1760s, built a stone house that incorporated parts of the earlier home. The house was purchased by Historic Huguenot Street in 1955.
