7/3/12 - "Roof Seat Break, 1894"

Roof Seat Break, 1894

Fine Art Prints and Art Gifts.

"A carriage said to have been originally designed to "break" or train colts and unruly horses, the break was a heavy vehicle with seats set high so the driver would have full visibility and control over his team.

Roof Seat Breaks were frequently used for pleasure driving and transporting large parties on outings and excursions. To accommodate long journeys, this carriage - owned by James Hoyt of Bellport, Long Island - came equipped with special compartments at the rear for storage of food, dishes and silverware."

This antique carriage was imaged at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, New York.
