The view looking south, from the front porch of my house barge, of a Bay Crane with the capacity of lifting 260 tons, which was setting up to move my neighbor's home back into our marina. Our turn would be next, and the anticipation of what might - or might not - happen to our home was palpable. These house barges were never designed to be picked up. They were built on the water, and towed to wherever they needed to be. So it was with some trepidation - on everyone's part - whether they would survive this method of being transported without being destroyed. Mind you, the lightest of the three - and the first one moved - weighed in at 40,000 pounds. And ours, the heavyweight of the three, proved to be a svelte 75,000 pounds - or 37 and 1/2 tons!
This move, orchestrated and arranged by Nassau County, happened nearly two weeks ago, on Thanksgiving Eve. The fact that it went very smoothly was something to be truly thankful for this year.
