Hummingbird Clearwing

Actually, as Sally and I found out when we got home last night, after a walk on the Orange Heritage Trailway - a 12.2-mile rail trail in Orange County, NY, that runs  from Monroe to a point halfway between Goshen and Middletown - Hemaris thysbe, a hummingbird mimic, with a wing span of 1.5 to 2.5 inches, is a moth, and not a hummingbird at all. Adults fly during the day, and hover at flowers to sip nectar.
