11/29/10 - "Thanksgiving Day Sunrise, No. 2"

"Thanksgiving Day Sunrise, No. 2"

As seen from my back door.

"Red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky at morning, sailors take warning." It's an old warning, and at one time a practical nursery rhyme; it even appears in the bible:

"Matthew 16:2-3: He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, it will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, it will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?"

Friday's weather, here in NY, was fine; no storms, it was warm for the season and nothing was brewing on the horizon. But there was a storm brewing - one of uncertainty, and potential impending doom - for the handful of us living here in house-barges.
Since the day after I moved in, nearly three years ago, I knew that someday we might have to move. It didn't seem imminent, even though ground was broken and construction begun, on an enormous waterfront house, in the former marina next door. From what I've heard today, we may have to vacate the premises as soon as early spring; we don't have to move out of our house-barges necessarily, but they can't stay here.

Around 25 years ago, there were many similar communities; but the towns locally have been 'encouraging' their elimination. I knew this day might come, but it doesn't make the reality any easier to take. I'm thankful for the three years I've had here, living in paradise; but, as with all good things, I don't want to see it come to an end. There are a couple of alternatives - relocation, or finding a savior to invest in retaining a dying way of life (or winning the lottery) - but none of them will be easily accomplished.

So, here's what I'd like to see happen: If 1,000 people each purchase a print of just one of my photos - at $1,000/per print - I can buy the lot where I'm moored and remain here, and continue to share images like today's Picture of the Day. Consider it an investment: Someday I may become famous, and you'll have gotten in on the ground floor.

OK, that's probably even less likely to happen than either Mega Millions or Power Ball cooperating; but a fella' can dream, can't he?
In the meantime, I think I'll place a "For Sale/Investor Wanted" ad on both Craigslist and Ebay.
