"Boardwalk to 855"
Dotting some of the islands, in the bays off the south shore of Long Island, are a dwindling number of bay houses. These small houses, originally built by commercial baymen, duck hunters and fishermen, once numbered in the hundreds; today, in the waters of the Town of Hempstead, where I reside, approximately 34 remain.
I've been making a concerted effort to visit and photograph as many of these as I can, as there's no telling if and when the next nor'easter might take another one away; and once they're gone, they cannot be replaced.
Each bay house that I've visited so far has a number; what that number represents, I don't yet know. This photo shows #855, which is connected - via a small boardwalk - to #744.
