"Roseman Bridge and Hoarfrosted Branches"

          This is a re-edit of a photo I took one year ago today, with my Canon Digital ELPH SD1000 point and shoot camera, during a visit to the bridges of Madison County. The white, hoarfrost crystals that morning were covering virtually every surface, creating a true, winter wonderland. It was the first time I'd ever seen hoarfrost, and I was captivated by nature's beauty and innovativeness yet again.

This bridge is what Robert Kincaid was seeking when, in the movie, he stopped at Francesca's home (Meryl Streep) seeking directions. It is also where she left a note for Robert (Clint Eastwood) inviting him for dinner.

"Spiked Hoarfrost"

          This was my first-ever sighting of hoarfrost, spotted just outside the door of the motel we were staying at in Winterset, Iowa - home to the covered bridges of Madison County.

 

"Multi-Barbed Wire"

 

Another example of hoarfrost, this time growing on barbed wire. I spotted this as I was trudging through thigh-deep snow, as I neared Roseman Bridge for a different viewing angle.

               "Bald Eagle by Roseman Bridge"

          As we approached Roseman Bridge, the first stop on our second day of touring the six remaining covered bridges (there were 19, originally) we spotted a Bald Eagle in the top of one of the trees. I got out of the car and managed to get a couple of shots, before it decided to fly away. The eagle is just visible, in a tree towards the upper left corner of this image.

"Winter Wonderland Panorama"

         

          This landscape was alongside one of the roads we traversed that day. The trees, shrubs and fences were all dressed in magical-looking ornamentation of white hoarfrost crystals.

          Looking back a year later, I'm still pretty impressed with the quality of the images I was able to capture with my little point and shoot camera. I wouldn't trade my Canon 5D for anything (well, except for a new Canon 5D Mark II maybe...) but the nice thing was, that camera was so small that I'd wear it in a pouch on my belt, every single day. There are many photos I shot that I would not otherwise have captured, due to that fact alone.
