"Holliwell Bridge - 1880"
A year ago today, Sally and I made an overnight pilgrimage to Winterset, Iowa - which is where (I was surprised to learn) the covered bridges featured in the movie "The Bridges of Madison County" are located. In my mind I'd thought they were in Wisconsin, for some reason. A few weeks prior I had stumbled upon the movie playing on TV. After it was over, I looked it up online and was amazed to find out that Winterset was only about 150 miles from where Sally was living in Fairfield, Iowa. As I was flying there in a few weeks, to help move her back to N.Y, we made plans to visit the bridges before getting ready the long drive east.
This bridge was built in 1880; and, at 122 feet, is the longest of the covered bridges. It is still in it's original location, over the Middle River; and is one of the three featured in the movie. It's one of the 6 covered bridges remaining - all that's left from the 19 that once existed in Madison County . All 6 are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They were covered by order of the County Board of Supervisors, in order to protect the large floor beams - which are much more expensive to replace than the lumber used for the walls and rooves. During our two day stay, Sally and I visited and photographed all 6 - with Sally standing in for Meryl Streep in a few of those images.
Cutler-Donohoe Bridge
This bridge was built in 1870 by Eli Cox. It is 79 feet long, and was originally over the North River near Bevington. In 1970 it was moved to its current location, in Winterset City Park; it was renovated in 1997. This bridge is not one of the three featured in the movie "Bridges of Madison County."
"En Route to Winterset"
All three of these pictures, as well as all the photos I took on our trip, were shot with my Canon Digital ELPH SD1000; it was only a 7.1 megapixel point and shoot, but it took great pictures - if you took it off of auto exposure and fully-utilized its capabilities.
