1/27/11 - "Sunrise, Geese and a Boat"

"Sunrise, Geese and a Boat"

We had about another 10" of snow last night. It's been a very snowy winter here - the snowiest since 1995-1996. When I woke up this morning I shot a few images of the frosty scenery from inside my housebarge, but they really weren't all that good. The one that got away, icicles hanging off the top of a double-hung window in my kitchen, probably would have been a much better picture; but they melted enough to slip off the sash, before I was awake enough to capture their brief existence. Besides that, I've been posting nothing but images of winter lately and I think it's time for a change.

So instead of yet another photo of frigid atmosphere, I'm posting another sunrise picture - this one from January 4th of this year. While it was taken in the dead of winter, it could pass for any season: Sunrises always warm my soul.

The boat is mine, and it's moored to a floating dock behind my floating home; I've had it for a year and a half now and it's expanded my horizons - both literally and figuratively: The geese are either residents or transients, it's impossible to tell, but they're ubiquitos all the same; they, as well as the rest of the waterfowl around here, have been kind of skittish for the last two months, as it's still hunting season till the 30th of the month: The sunrise is one of nature's best gifts; there's one every day - even on cloudy days, when they may not be visible in their full spendor - and they're one of the greatest rewards for waking early.
