This 43-story, Art Deco style hotel was built in 1929; and, for many years, it was New York's largest hotel - with 2,500 guest rooms, 5 restaurants and a barber shop with 42 chairs!
I spotted this picture as I stepped outside for a cigarette, during Wednesday's remote for Fox 5 TV. We were shooting some promos for their "Health Authority" campaign, and were at our second location of the day - the Skylight Diner on 34th Street, just west of 9th Avenue. The sun was sinking low in the sky, as it was about 5:20 pm. (This time is approximate, as I just checked the photometric data for my Digital ELPH and noticed that the time is off - by about an hour and 20 minutes.) The hotel was strikingly lit, with the late afternoon rays burnishing the brick facade with a deep golden glaze; with the red sign above made even more luminous than usual; all of this etched against a blue and cloudless sky.
For some reason, though, this photo just wasn't doing it for me in color. But when I started working on it as a black and white, it struck me as a much more dramatic image. I'll embed the color version here too, for comparison:
