2/4/11 - "After the fog Ascends"

"After the fog Ascends"

Those of you who read this blog on a daily basis will understand, without need of explanation, the relevance of today's Picture of the Day. It's one of a short series I shot Wednesday. Two of those images have already appeared on this page, and today's will be the last related post.

This morning was the funeral for a good friend of mine - one whom my posts of the last few days have referenced. She died much too young, after enduring many personal struggles and a long battle with lupus. Rest in peace, Peggy - you will be missed!

Fortunately, Sally and I were both able to attend, as she has today off and I didn't have to be at work until later on. We weren't able to make the wake yesterday, as we were both working; so I was grateful to be present at the church service. As a nonpracticing atheist, and a recovering Roman Catholic, I was leery of being smote upon entering St. Raymond's; but my presence was not in any way punished - at least not yet.

This is the first funeral I've been to in almost exactly three years - the year before my father passed on. That funeral was for my grandniece, who was only a few months old, and who died in an horrifically tragic accident. It was an extremely sad experience, the saddest I've ever attended. For Dad, we did not have a funeral; instead, there was a wake and a small service for him at the funeral home. My father's passing came after a long fight with cancer, which he eventually lost. As such, it was not a surprise, and was almost a relief - for those who loved him, and hated seeing the suffering he endured and for him as well, I suspect. Curiously, in yet another example of the synchronicity that seems, at times, to permeate my life, his name was Raymond.
