2/6/11 - "A Memory Blurred by Time"

"A Memory Blurred by Time"

This photo is from a trip to one of the first covered bridges I ever visited, on May 27th, 2007. It was taken with my first real digital camera, a Canon Digital ELPH S230. Although my actual first camera, a Casio, was more like a toy, it still set me back about $500 in the late '90's. My future ex-wife, bless her heart, wasn't too pleased with that purchase; but by the time I could afford a better camera, her opinion didn't count any more.

The location was in West Cornwall, Connecticut - a small town in the Berkshire region of northwestern CT, where most (if not all) of Connecticut's covered bridges are situated. This historic two span bridge, of Town Lattice and Queenpost Truss construction still allows vehicular traffic to cross over the Housatonic River. The bridge is either 172' or 242' long, and was built in either 1841 or 1864, according to which of the two different sources I referenced you believe. (I've included links to both sites,  if you're curious.) It was rehabilitated in 1973, by the Connecticut Department of Transportation, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

When I took this picture, I was standing inside the bridge shooting views of the river beneath, framing shots through one of the many windows that line both walls. I barely had time to frame this old automobile as it drove slowly across the bridge, much less try to adjust any settings, or to try for something more creative. I'm not a big fan of intentionally blurred images, as it seems more a fad these days then anything else. But I'm pleased with how this photo came out. When I originally posted this on deviantART, nearly four years ago, I submitted it as a black and white photo; but today I think the full color version is the better image. I'll post a link to the original b&w for those who may be interested.
