"Second Avenue Gym Blues"
This is a view, from the west side of Second Avenue in Manhattan, of the gymnasium at the Julia Richman Education Complex. Formerly the home of Julia Richman High School, which was the only public high school on the Upper East Side of New York, it was built in 1923 and was originally an all girls school. Today, this massive five story building contains four high schools, one junior high school and an elementary school.
I shot this photo just around dusk on Sunday night, went I went for a walk during my dinner break. The colors are enhanced somewhat, and I also adjusted the image for brightness and contrast. The only other tweaking I did was to skew the picture a bit, to compensate for a little barrel distortion.
While I was messing around in Photoshop this morning, I tried applying a filter to the edited image, which had an unexpectedly pleasing result:
"Second Avenue Blue-Polar Gym"
The filter I applied is one of a dozen available under the Distort sub-category, which is one of 12 categories of filters. The particular distortion effect I used is called Polar Coordinates, and it provides two options - Rectangular to Polar and Polar to Rectangular. This photo manipulation is the result of a rectangular to polar conversion. Maybe I shouldn't be sharing these tricks of the trade, as some may feel I'm giving away secrets. But I think not.
