These are the gravestones of Nicoll Floyd, on the right, and his wife Tabitha Smith, who both died in 1755 and are buried here on the family estate in Mastic Beach, NY. Their son William, at that time just barely 20 years old, inherited the 4,400 acre plantation and the responsibility of raising his six younger brothers and sisters. William went on to marry Hannah Jones of Bridgehampton, NY and eventually became a General in the Revolutionary War, and one of the 56 signers of America's Declaration of Independence.

I'm not sure which version I prefer more. Here's a link to "William Floyd Estate - Family Cemetery #1" which I posted as a Picture of the Day back on June 6th, the day after our visit to this site. It's part of the Fire Island National Seashore on the south shore of Long Island. That photo, which is one of my all-time favorites, was definitely best when rendered as a black and white.
