9/6/11 - "Walking Dunes"

Fine Art prints from Imagekind.com

So these are not the locally-famous Walking Dunes of Hither Hills, on the South Fork of Long Island, which are "a series of parabolic dunes...completely dependent on vegetation and moisture...usually found in uni-modal wind regimes" or any of the other walking dunes, found in various locations throughout the world. This image was captured at Gilgo Beach, which is about 1 1/2 hours west of Hither Hills.

My photo is more of a play on words, as these dunes are not all that similar to real walking dunes. While these dunes do migrate a bit, they are much smaller than prototypical walking dunes, as evidenced by the human footprints in the foreground last Monday - one day after Hurricane Irene.
