Abraham Hasbrouck was one of the twelve men who purchased 40,000 acres from the Esopus Indians and founded New Paltz in 1678.  Tradition had long held that the distinctive house at the northern end of Huguenot Street was built by Abraham.

While recent studies contradict this, the truth remains that this house is a testament to the industry and success of the Hasbrouck family.

Maria Deyo, Abraham's widow, was the head of the family when construction of this house began in 1721.  She and her son Daniel oversaw its building.  The home consists of three large rooms, with the center one being the earliest, flanked by two rooms built as the family's size and wealth increased.  The house contains many elements of colonial Dutch architecture, including large jambless fireplace and an opkamer, or upper chamber, built for Maria.
