Axle And Spokes
This "Chariot D'Orsay" - which was built between 1875 - 1885, by the French company of Million & Guiet - belonged to William K. Vanderbilt, one of the wealthiest men in America. This type of carriage was recognized by its elevation, large wheels and extreme elegance - including silver-plated hardware. It was driven by a coachman, and accompanied by footmen to assist passengers. Image captured at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, New York.
