Parade Hose Carriage, 1875

Fine Art Prints and Art Gifts.

A Parade Hose Carriage from 1875, by the Rumsey Manufacturing Company in Seneca Falls, New York.

Ostensibly a functional vehicle, hose carriages such as this were designed to carry fire hose into spaces where larger and heavier fire vehicles could not go.

In actuality, however, hose carriages of this quality were more for show, and there is no record of this one being used at fire scenes. Designed to be pulled by men, not horses, this vehicle was the star of numerous parades.

I photographed this carriage recently, at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, New York.
