"56th between 5th and 6th"
or
"One up, One down"
During my lunch break today, after a meal from the NBC commissary, I decided to grab my new camera, a Canon EOS 5D, and stroll uptown with the intention of making it to Central Park. When I got to 57th Street, though, I realized that I wouldn't have enough time; so I turned east and started hunting for photo ops.
About halfway down the block I turned right into a public passage way. Along both sides were sculptures, one of which I stopped to photograph. The artwork depicted three modernized figures representing the classic "See no evil; Hear no evil; Speak no evil." and were posed in front of the Bay Leaf Indian Cuisine restaurant. One of the photos (the first one I shot, actually - which often proves to be the best photo, for me) I posted on this blog as my alternative "Picture of the Day".
Continuing south through the passage, and turning east on 56th Street, I soon spotted the building depicted above. As I've been working full-time in Manhattan for almost 30 years, my eye is often to drawn to buildings that are somewhat out of the ordinary, or to 'urban oddities'. This juxtaposition of buildings, combined with the unusual - for Manhattan - colors and unusual awnings instantly captured my attention. I shot three slightly different exposures, and ended up cropping and tweaking this image a bit in Photoshop before posting it here.
I'm not completely satisfied with the final product, and I very well may re-edit and re-post it eventually, but for now it will have to suffice.
