11/14/10 - "Reflective Transparency"

"Reflective Transparency"

The word "photograph" comes from the Greek words photos, meaning "light" and graphe, which translates as "representation by means of lines" or "drawing". Hence, photography is - literally - "drawing with light". This is most fortunate, as I can't draw worth a damn. I can, however, recognize a good "drawing with light" when I see one. The ability to see, in a photographic sense, may be the most important ability of all to possess. Anyone can master the basics of taking pictures, and learn the principles of composition and contrast; many can become technical masters of the equipment involved, and execute flawless prints: But to be able to see? I'm not sure that that can be taught, or learned.

I've been told by many that I have a good eye for photography, and I believe that to be true. I know that I have a passion for taking photographs, and have been pursuing that passion for over thirty years. I enjoy sharing my "drawings" with others, with the hope that they may satisfy on some level.

Today's Picture of the Day was a typical photographic find, for me. I was walking towards the lobby of a hotel in upstate NY when I happened to look through an interior window, over-looking the indoor pool and spa. I shot two pictures, and ended up using the first image - as I find often happens. The picture is exactly as exposed, with only minor cropping done in Photoshop.
