12/07/10 - "Fire Island Lighthouse #9"

"Fire Island Lighthouse #9"

According to the data that are miraculously (to me, at least, this child of pre-digital vintage) embedded with each and every digital photo I take, this picture was shot on December 24th, 2006 - at 12:34:26 pm. It is arguably the best image I've taken yet of the Fire Island Lighthouse, at least with a digital camera. I'd have to go back through all my old slides and negatives to check that claim out, something I don't yet have time for. That may be a retirement project.

From what I remember, it was an unseasonably warm day, with a day-time high of around 65F. I just did a quick search online and - for a fee - I could have verified that recollection, but it's not that important, really. It was amazing to find out that some daily weather data is available online, going back as far as 1902! Most hourly data, starting in 1972, can also be easily obtained. I'll post a link to the website, for those of you who may be interested.

I'm posting this photo today for my good friend Bob, who recently mentioned in a comment he posted his shared love of lighthouses. I took some photos the other day of this Suffolk County south shore beacon, and none were up to snuff. Perhaps, what with global warming and all, this years' Christmas Eve will be as warm - or even warmer! That sounds especially nice, to me - especially after being outside in Rockefeller Plaza yesterday for 15 hours, shooting a pre-tape for Carson Daly's New Years Eve special.

I'm starting one new feature today with this posting. I'm including camera data for each image posted, for those interested in that kind of minutiae, starting with today's picture. I'll be updating previous Pictures of the Day with this info, over the ensuing days, as time allows. Looking over the data just now, I realized that this photo was shot with my first Canon point and shoot - a PowerShot S230 Digital ELPH, with only 3.2 megapixels. It's a testament to Canon's ability to create a camera capable of taking such high quality photos, in a subcompact model that's remarkably durable and very reasonably priced.
