"Cold Commute"
A view out the window of the 2:17pm LIRR train to Penn Station yesterday, as I was on my way into the city - during a raging blizzard - for work. This train ride was nearly as scheduled, except for a small delay in Jamaica, as we had to wait for a connecting train to arrive. Once in Manhattan I had planned on hopping a subway uptown, to Rockefeller Center, but as the wind wasn't blowing that hard in the city - yet - I decided to walk.
At 9 pm, our dinner hour, the walk west on 49th Street and across Sixth Avenue was brutal. The temperature had fallen from 25F to 22F, and the winds had really picked up. I found out after dinner that all LIRR service had been suspended indefinitely. Fortunately, two of the guys I was working with had driven in, and kindly dropped me off in Seaford. The driving was treacherous, at best, and many cars had spun out and were stuck in snow banks. In order to exit Meadowbrook State Parkway, whose exit ramp was full with cars which couldn't make it up the incline, Lou u-turned in the southbound lanes and drove north to where the on ramp merges. Exiting up the entrance ramp was ballsy, but - thanks to his four wheel drive SUV - it worked! We made it to East Meadow; two of us transferred to a second car for the drive to Seaford; and Joe, who lives in Bellmore, then headed home. I was able to make it home relatively easily, at about my usual arrival time of 1:30 am - in my 12 year old front wheel drive Camry (which desperately needs new tires!) - mainly due to having parked under the protection of the train trestle facing out.
