"Harae"

(Purification Rite)

R. Eli Torres

This is an art installation at MUM (Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa) by R. Eli Torres.

The title card with this display listed the elements as "Salt; Rocks; Leaves" - to which someone appended, in ink "Dead Flies" - imbuing this work with a whole other level of meaning.

While the full installation was, maybe, 10' x 20' in area, I concentrated on photographing small, isolated sections, trying to get multiples of each element into a pleasantly composed image. This was the one that I liked best.

Here's a cropped photo of the original title card:

The following day we flew back to New York. I took a bunch of pictures - but not nearly as many as on our flights west - but, as I had to twist and crane my neck to see out my window (which was partially behind me) I didn't get too many good shots. Here's a few of the best:

"Sunset from Above the Clouds"

Looking to the southwest, from above Lake Erie and somewhere north of Cleveland, the last colors of sunset were still visible, just over the horizon.

"Approaching LaGuardia"

It was a little bumpy, as we were descending towards the runway, but I was still shooting pictures (despite the announcement to "Please stow all electronic gear). While my camera has an image stabilized lens, it's not capable of eliminating the blur of the streetlights, as we were bounced a bit before touchdown.

"Landing at LaGuardia"

Shortly after touching down in N.Y. I snapped a couple more photos. This one shows mid-town Manhattan in the distance, with the Empire State Building - at center - immediately to the left of the slightly smaller, and older, Chrysler Building. Minutes later we were at the gate; and not too much after that, we'd gotten a ride to the off-airport long-term parking lot, and were heading home to Seaford. While it's always nice to go away, it's nice to come home again too!
