"Dunce"



          This image is a view of two dunce caps, as seen through a window of Cedar #6 Peach Blossom - an old one room schoolhouse - which is currently located at Round Prairie Park in Jefferson County Iowa, approximately 11 miles southeast of Fairfield, Iowa. This building was in use in the early 1900's, and was moved to this site from "Wooster Corner" on Glasgow Road in the late '70's.

          When I arrived at this park yesterday, after driving through three inches of freshly fallen snow, one of the first things I noticed was this schoolhouse, on the far side of a frozen pond. Hiking along the trail that circled the eastern side of this pond, I stopped at one point. Looking up, I spotted three deer - one buck, and two does - about 150 yards away, in a little field to the left of this structure. They must have spied me at nearly the exact same time, as all three immediately bounded away to the west. I was able to locate their hoof prints in the snow, and I followed them up the hill - stopping briefly to shoot a few pictures - until I found the spot from which they'd begun their escape.           Later that afternoon, I went out on another photo expedition. The winds had really picked up, by that point, gusting to 35 mph; and the air temperature had fallen to 23 F. As the wind chill factor must have been at or below 0 F, I only ventured outside the car once - to get some photos of an old barn (which was nearly skeletal) silhouetted by the newly emergent and almost setting sun. One of those photos will most likely be tomorrow's Picture of the Day.
