"Abandoned Prairie Barn"
I spotted this skeletal barn while driving east from Brighton, Iowa on Jefferson-Washington Road, which is also known as Iowa 78. Turning south at the corner of this farmland, I pulled off to the side of Walnut road and climbed the embankment onto this snow-covered, plowed field of rich, dark soil. The sun started making brief appearances during breaks in the previously cloud-filled skies, which overnight had deposited 3" of powdery-dry snow. During the day the temperatures dropped - to 23 degrees F, at the time this photograph was taken - and the wind increased, gusting up to 35 mph.
The previous night, the night of our arrival in Iowa, I shot the following photo:
"Mid-Winter Midwest Home"
This house - on B Street, in the middle of the town of Fairfield - was photographed at dusk, and was still decorated for the holidays. This image was a 13 second exposure at ISO 50 with my Canon 5D; I used a porch railing in place of a tripod, and the 30 second self timer instead of a remote switch or controller.
