2/19/11 - "Kaaterskill Falls"

"Kaaterskill Falls"

This waterfall is, at 260 feet, the highest two-tiered waterfall in New York State. The upper drop is 180 feet and the lower one is 80 feet. When I re-visited Kaaterskill, two years ago this coming June, it was my first return there in about 25 years. It's lost none of its splendor through the years. While I did not hike the trail that passes behind the waterfall on that visit, I did last summer. It's a spectacular vista, although the hike behind the falls can be pretty dangerous - especially in wet weather!

Kaatskil is the original Dutch name for the mountains which are popularly known as the Catskills. These are not really mountains at all, but more of a plateau dissected by erosion than a series of mountain ranges.

I've shot quite a few pictures of Kaaterskill Falls over the years. But I still haven't taken my best photograph of this geologic creation yet. I hope to make more visits there soon, to attempt yet again to get that quintessential image, the one that will make me feel as if I've finally captured its raw essence and eternal beauty to the bast of my ability. I may never be totally satisfied, but it gives me a good reason to keep returning, to keep on trying.
