3/7/11 - "Put me in, Coach..."

I'm ready to play, today.

Despite the cold, drizzly and - at times - even sleety weather the morning of Opening Day, the game went on as planned. And, after a go-ahead home run by center fielder Curtis Granderson in the 7th inning, the Yankees held on to win!

Today's picture is a macro photograph of rain drops, on the railing of the Yankees' dugout. It was a week ago today, and I was back at Yankee Stadium for the first time since game 1 of the 2009 World Series. Once again we were on the field in front of the home teams' dugout, but this time for Fox 5's Good Day New York morning show, instead of the 5 & 6 O'Clock News. As I've been a Yankees fan for as long as I can remember, it's an especially big thrill to be able to stand on the same field they play baseball on; and even a bigger thrill to sit in the dugout! Although this is the new stadium, and not the historic "House That Ruth Built" of my childhood fantasies, it still felt special.

I did get the chance to sit in the dugout of the old stadium, for a short while at least, during the Pope's visit to N.Y. in April of 2008. But, unlike the two times I was at the new stadium in '09, for the first games of both the American League Championship Series and The World Series - when I was in complete awe the time Derek Jeter walked past me during batting practice - there were no players present then.
