"Portrait Alongside the Bikepath"
Fine Art Prints, Matting and Framing.
This is the next to last photo I shot last Sunday, and will be the last of this series to be posted here.
Yesterday morning, while looking out my back door, I saw my first Snowy Egret of the year, on the marshy island across the channel from my *housebarge. Also for the first time this year, I saw a couple of swallows, while I was standing at my kitchen sink. I have a double window there, which looks out at Seaman's Neck Park towards the east, The swallows were flitting around and under a neighbor's pier, where they have built their nests the last few summers. A couple of weeks prior to this I noticed the return of a few Great Egrets, who were also out on the island. And for the last few days I've been spotting Boat-Tailed Grackles too, on the island and in my neighbors' backyard. Meanwhile, I'm still seeing a raft or two of Red-Breasted Mergansers nearly every morning, each with one to two dozen members, synchronously diving for the dinners as they work the incoming tides. The Brant, who are also winter visitors here, are still plentiful, and have become much less gun-shy, since the echoes of hunting season stopped reverberating last month.
* On the map linked here, my housebarge is indicated by the green arrow. The marshy island - which I believe is called Seaman's Island - is at the bottom third of the map, and Seaman's Neck Park is in the upper right third.
The first-returning avian summer resident this year was a lone Great Cormorant, which first showed up about a month ago, and who was the sole representative of her kind until just recently. My dear friend Peggy, who passed away - much too soon - in February, had told me that cormorants were her absolute favorite bird. So every time I spotted this cormorant I'd say Hi to her, as I believe Peggy's essence lives on in this earliest of seasonal returnees.
