4/11/11 - "Frost House 3 - 1160 3rd Avenue"

"Frost House 3 - 1160 3rd Avenue"

I had been eyeing this visage for a few days before I finally had an opportunity to photograph it. Frost House - which was erected in 1965, and has 146 co-operative apartments building - is directly across Third Avenue from America's Burgers and Wraps, where I get my coffee during breaks (and also an occasional cheeseburger for dinner). During one 9 pm coffee break, I noticed this shot from across the street, and I made arrangements with the doorman - George - to be allowed to photograph it the next night. That next night was last Monday, and tonight it becomes my Picture of the Day.

As you can discern, if you look closely, only one couch and two lamps actually exist in this image - the others are all reflections. The second couch, and the 3rd and 4th lamps, are direct reflections in a floor to ceiling mirror, which is a few feet away from the couch. All of the other reflected lamps are actually twice-reflected; first, from the plate glass windows along Third Avenue, which are then - along with the view through the windows - reflected in the mirror.

Also making a cameo appearance in this picture are two of the legs of my tripod, and the front portion of my right sneaker-shod foot. For most of the shots I took of this scene I had successfully hidden myself from sight, behind a large column, which is just inside the front doors; but for this particular angle, I had to cheat into line-of-sight. And the blurry, blue and red streaks visible, in this reflected section of the front windows, are actually the lights from a passing MTA articulated bus, during this 13-second-long exposure.
