"Abandoned Barn #4"
Yesterday morning I received some great news in an email. It was from the Huntington Arts Council, where I'd sent 10 entries to their upcoming 8th Annual Juried Photography Show.
I had been notified last Wednesday that one of my submissions, Curbside Cubism #1, had been selected for the show, and I was very excited. I started spreading the word to family and friends about my good fortune, and sending along info pertaining to the Opening Night Reception. Yesterday's email notified me that a second image of mine, today's Picture of the Day - Abandoned Barn #4 - had also been chosen to be included in the show. I was literally shouting for joy when I read this because, as I found out in a phone call a little later, my photos were two of only 40 that were selected - by 29 different photographers - from a total of 260 submissions.
During this phone call I also learned the reason for the delayed notification of this second selection. It seems that two pictures were submitted with the same, or nearly the same, titles. Another photographer had also submitted an abandoned barn photo, and had been erroneously notified that their rendition had been selected to be in the show. I felt terrible for the other person when I heard this, as I believe I understand how he or she must have felt. I also felt bad for Florence Dallari, the assistant director of the Huntington Arts Council, where this exhibit is being held, as she had the unenviable job of delivering the bad news.
Sally was especially happy to hear this news though, as my barn photo was one of her top three favorites (of the pictures I submitted) - both because it's a beautiful shot, and for the fact that she lived in Fairfield Iowa (near to where this photograph was taken) for 17 years. And, her two daughters still reside there.
As a footnote to this story, back on January 14th I originally posted two other visions of this barn, as Co-Pictures of the Day - the first and only time I've done that. In retrospect, neither of them are nearly as good as this photo.
For a second footnote, I add this bit of synchronicity: Sally has a good friend, Marisa, who also had a photograph selected to be in the show! All three of us graduated from Farmingdale High School at the same time (which will remain unspecified); I only admired them both from afar back then, though.
