This is one of seven bayhouses, all within a half mile of each other, just south of Merrick NY - on Long Island's South Shore. Once, there were hundreds of these "shacks" - as some owners affectionately call them - in the shallow, marshy-island dotted waters of the Town of Hempstead. Today, only about 30 remain.
I shot some pictures of four of the seven on this trip, which was just a drive-by with my boat. I've since been back to this neighborhood a few times, and have more fully photographed four of the seven. I plan on visiting all that remain, and document their existence, in case they follow their lost brethren and fall victim to storms or vandalism. At this point I've only been to about half of the these houses, so I still have a years' work - or maybe two - until this project is complete.
P.S. As Saturday has been, for the last three months, my only day off - and as I've been more than usually busy the last week especially - I decided not to finish getting this post ready last night. Instead, my love and I went out for a very nice dinner, did grocery shopping on the way home, and then watched the movie 127 Hours together, in front of the fire. I also went out shooting yesterday afternoon at home, and visited Massapequa Lake - for the first time in quite a while. The results of that shoot will appear here over the next couple of days.
