"Out Standing in its Field"
I'm not sure of its' vintage, but this fire hydrant surely looks as if it's rarely, if ever, put to use - and that's very fortunate. It's a safety sentinel, on the lush grounds of the Vanderbilt Mansion country palace in Hyde Park, NY.
This 54 room, steel-framed house was built in 1898; and it is - at 55,000 square feet, on 625 acres - the smallest and least expensive of the famed Vanderbilt Mansions. It's also "one of the finest and most intact of the lavish estates built by wealthy 19th-century industrialists along the Hudson River."
Today's picture extends this series to 12 posts of this estate. I have five more images to go, but I'll be posting two on each of the next two blogs; the fifth - and 15th in this photo essay - will stand last, and alone.
