9/19/11 - "Thoreau's Home at Walden Pond #1"

Fine Art Prints and Framing

A first look at the replica of Henry David Thoreau's home - at Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord, Massachusetts. This one-room house, which he constructed himself, measures 10' by 15' - with an 8' high ceiling inside. His total cost of construction materials (back in 1845, when he built it) was 28 dollars, 12 and a half cents!

While it took three tries to finally locate this historic site, as my first two attempts on Friday failed, it was well worth the effort. The first two unsuccessful tries were due to an old programming maxim: "Garbage in, Garbage out". I failed to input the exact street address for this site, either to my GPS or Google Maps, due to haste on my part before departing Friday morning. As a result our first stop early Friday afternoon, relying solely on the poorly programmed GPS, was off by about 60 miles. While we were heading further east, during my blind-faith following of the Google Map-derived location for our second attempt - during Friday afternoon's increasing traffic, as we grew nearer to the Boston area - we unknowingly passed by Walden twice. The first drive-by, while eastbound on I-90, we passed within 10 miles of Walden Pond; and on our second near-miss, while heading north on I-95, we came within 5 miles of my intended destination. We finally arrived at, instead of Walden Pond in Concord, an identically-named but completely different Walden Pond in Lynn, Massachusetts - 26 miles, and a very frustrating hour or more of needless rush-hour driving, away. At that point  I gave up any hope of seeing Walden that afternoon with Sally. Instead, I made lone-pilgrimages there, both Saturday and Sunday mornings, from our hotel in Nashua, New Hampshire - which, as it turned out, was only 32 miles away...
